A
lifelong hunter, J. Y. Jones has harvested every species and
subspecies of big game animal in North America, including
an honest ten-foot brown bear. But the polar bear was problematic,
primarily because of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972
(MMPA). In addition to prohibiting a sport hunt for the Alaskan
polar bear, this law also prohibited United States citizens
from importing polar bears harvested elsewhere. Convinced
that such policies and restrictions were misguided and damaging,
Jones embarked on a six-year odyssey to prove his point to
government officials.
This
is the story of the endless obstacles, the pervasive bureaucracy,
the faithful allies, and the triumphs and the setbacks encountered
on his quest. Through it all he was ever buoyed by his working
theme for this project: 'Act as if it were impossible to fail.' |
